Abstract:

Shallow lakes from the Pampa plains are inland water bodies that contribute significantly to biodiversity, provide numerous ecosystem services (i.e., biogeochemical cycles, nutrient recycling) and are also a valuable economic resource. However, their shallow depth makes them susceptible to disturbances and stress, both natural and anthropic. With the intensification of agriculture in the Pampa region, shallow lakes have been polluted with pesticides and chemical fertilizers used in the surrounding agricultural systems. Among these pesticides, glyphosate is the most widely used, both in Argentina and worldwide. On the other hand, the organisms that inhabit those environments could be particularly affected by the inputs of this (and others) pollutants. However, there are several reports from experimental studies in micro- and mesocosms that showed that glyphosate inputs promoted the growth of small size cyanobacteria (picocyanobacteria) abundances, which are not only resistant to the herbicide, but can also use it as a source of phosphorus. The general objective of this thesis is to relate the abundance and composition of the picocyanobacteria of shallow lakes with the use of the herbicide N-phosphonomethylglycine (glyphosate) in the surrounding terrestrial ecosystems. In the first chapter, it is we detailed the theoretical framework and the general aspects of the study area, shallow lakes and the biological communities that inhabit these water bodies. In the second chapter we evaluated the presence of glyphosate and AMPA in shallow lakes from the study area (Pampa and Patagonia). In the third chapter we evaluated the spatial and temporal distribution of glyphosate and AMPA in shallow lakes from the upper and lower basins of the Rio Salado. In the fourth chapter, we evaluated the effect that glyphosate and its associated variables (degradation genes, land use and land cover) have on the abundance of picocyanobacteria and heterotrophic bacteria. In the fifth chapter we evaluated the effect that glyphosate has on the molecular diversity of picocyanobacteria communities.
